Lymphedema is an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that causes swelling in the arms, legs, or other areas of the body. It is caused by congenital defects of the lymph system or by procedures such as a mastectomy or lumpectomy, radiation therapy, other surgeries, or trauma. Left untreated, lymphedema can interfere with wound healing and increase the risk of infection.
Lymphedema cannot be cured, however our therapists have been specially trained to offer patients effective lymphedema management techniques. These techniques aid in the reduction of swelling, promote wound healing, prevent skin infections, and improve functioning of the affected area.
Lymphedema management techniques include:
• Manual lymph drainage to redirect fluid
• Compression bandaging/garment fitting
• Skin and nail care education
• Personalized home exercise program
• Patient education
