Swedish Massage is a system of long strokes, kneading and friction techniques on the more superficial layers of the muscles, combined with active and passive movements of the joints.
Shiatsu Massage – the technical definition of the word Shiatsu is finger pressure. (“shi” meaning finger and “atsu” meaning pressure). This is the most basic definition, and it lends an idea as to what Shiatsu massage therapy is all about. Shiatsu massage therapy is an ancient form of healing that involves applying pressure to various points on the body combined with other massage techniques. Known also as acupressure (not to be confused with acupuncture), shiatsu massage therapy is intended as a healing method, not just a relaxation tool. In traditional Chinese and Japanese medicine, it is believed that this energy creates health and well-being, and if this energy flow is disrupted in some way (disruptions can be caused by many things, including negative thoughts, tension, and more), the body will react in illness and bad health.
Deep Pressure or Deep Tissue Massage is a massage technique that focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It aims to release the chronic patterns of tension in the body through slow strokes and deep finger pressure on the contracted areas, either following or going across the fiber’s of the muscles, tendons and fascia. Deep tissue massage is used to release chronic muscle tension through slower strokes and more direct deep pressure or friction applied across the grain of the muscles not with the grain. Deep tissue massage helps to break up and eliminate scar tissue. Deep tissue massage usually focuses on more specific areas and may cause some soreness during or right after the massage. However, if the massage is done correctly you should feel better than ever within a day or two.
Heated Stone or Hot Stone Massage is a specialty massage that uses smooth, heated stones. They are often basalt, a black volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well. It is a deeply soothing, relaxing form of massage. The heat helps tight muscles release tension and stress.
Pregnancy Massage is the prenatal use of massage therapy to support the physiologic, structural, and emotional well-being of both mother and baby. Various forms of massage therapy, including Swedish, deep tissue, neuromuscular, movement, and Oriental-based therapies, may be applied throughout pregnancy as well as during labor and the postpartum period.
Infant Massage is the process of rubbing an infant’s muscles and stroking the infant in a manner specifically designed for them. Although there are professionally trained and certified infant massage therapists, the obvious first choice to massage the baby is the mother, father, grandparent, or guardian. Equally important are the people who care for children outside the home such as, nurses on neonatal intensive care units (NICU) that work with premature babies and those who work with the disabled. The benefits derived from massage are applicable and advantageous for all of these groups.
