SLP’s will work with patients to increase their language abilities. This would include their abilities to verbalize their thoughts, understand what is being said to them, reading, and writing. Sometimes people experience deficits that make it hard for them to communicate. Some patients experience aphasia which is a language disorder, dysarthria which is oral motor weakness resulting in poor speech, apraxia which is a motor programming deficit and makes it harder to program speech movements for clear speech, and ataxia which is also motor programming deficit resulting in incoordination of speech. With children we may work on helping him develop a speech and language abilities so that they can communicate effectively with their family and friends as well as maximizing their learning potential.
